The most British dish you know isn't British at all.

Culture & Food + Branding/Publication

Overview

Pescado Frito is a high-end restaurant concept that reclaims one of Britain’s most beloved dishes, fish and chips, by restoring its true origins to Portuguese and Jewish culinary traditions. A brand built not just around food, but around history that’s been quietly erased.

Scope

+ naming + copywriting
+ research + creative strategy
+ publication + collateral

  • Fish and chips is one of the most recognizable dishes in the world, and one of the most misattributed. Its roots trace back to Sephardic Jewish and Portuguese cooking traditions that predate its British popularization by centuries, yet virtually no restaurant in the space acknowledges this. The cultural labor of immigrant communities has been absorbed into national identity without credit.

  • In a saturated casual dining landscape, authenticity and specificity create loyalty. The three communities at the heart of this story: British, Portuguese, and Jewish — don't need to be in tension. Pescado Frito's brand didn't need to argue with history; it needed to celebrate what history actually looked like.

Pescado Frito, fried fish in Portuguese, the name Sephardic Jews gave the dish they carried across continents, signals immediately that this place knows something most people don't.

The Pescado Frito Cookbook

Time-Honored Flavors, Reimagined

Answer

The brand positions Pescado Frito between historic authenticity and upscale dining, refined enough to feel premium, rooted to feel real. Every touchpoint carries the same idea of restoration.

The visual identity layers Portuguese tile tradition, Sephardic ornamental motifs, and coastal Mediterranean warmth — kept together rather than separated, because the cuisine itself was always a product of cultural overlap.

The cookbook, Time-Honored Flavors, Reimagined, extends the brand beyond the restaurant, turning diners into people who carry the story with them.

The result is a brand that makes history feel like a reason to celebrate.
